SESSION ONE: ANIMATION FROM AROUND THE WORLD (3:00 PM - 7:00 PM)

A fantastic collection of animation from Indian animation of yore (curated by Lightcube) to award-winning animation curated by Edinburgh International Film Festival and from the Japan Media Art Festival.

1. Retrospective on Indian Animation   (3:00 - 4:00 PM) 
Curated by Lightcube, the screenings showcase the history of animation in India.  The screening traces the lineage of Indian animation over the past hundred years, and celebrates the work of its pioneers and custodians.

2. McLaren Award Nominees: Programme Two  (4:00 - 5:15 PM)
The package jointly curated with Edinburgh International Film Festival highlighting the best British animation that has been nominated for the EIFF's prestigious McLaren Award.
First presented in 1990, the McLaren Award provides a focus for new British short animation and recognises the spirit of creativity. The award is named in honour of Norman McLaren, the renowned Scottish-born animator.  Drawing from the McLaren Award-nominated films selected from 2008-2012, the package provides an insight into the great creative talent involved in making animated films in the UK today.

3. Entertainment & Animation Selection (5:30 - 7:00 PM)
This program comprises 14 works from award-winning works and jury selections of the Entertainment and Animation Division from the Japan Media Arts Festival 2014.

SESSION TWO : JAPANESE MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL SHOWCASE  (8:00 PM - 1:00 AM)

1. Beyond the Technology  (8:00 - 8:30 PM)
New modes of expression made possible by the continuing evolution of digital technology have produced today’s sense of great diversity.This program features the sensibilities of the creators and imaginative powers they share with regard to our contemporary world through the introduction of 10 works.

3. Daxophone, The Talking Wooden Instrument  (10:00 - 11:00 PM)
Daxophone, the Talking Wooden Instrument / UCHIHASHI Kazuhisa
The daxophone is a wooden instrument invented by the prodigious German designer and musician, the late Hans Reichel. With a percussion-like rhythm and sound like that of a stringed instrument or even the cry of a wild animal, it produces a rich variety of music. Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Reichel’s bosom friend and the only daxophonist in Japan, improvises on the instrument.

4. Modular Synthesizer Improvisation  (11:00 - 12:00 PM)
This is the group of female analogue synthesizer unit galcid and solitary “synthesist” Hisashi Saito. The live improvisation applies mainly analog and modular synthesizers to the No Preset No PC theme. Visitors can experience the unique sounds and rhythms of the moment which only the people there will ever know.

5. A psychedelic history of video games  (12:00 - 1:00 AM)
VJ Thiruda from the popular audiovisual act BLOT! takes on Spryk - a Mumbai based music producer and DJ - as they create a fast paced electronic dance music journey through the history of videogames. This is the first dance music party on stage inside the 150 year old Edward Cinema - not to be missed!
